With deep respect for Sri Lanka’s faith and cultural heritage, I urge you to protect elephants used in religious and traditional processions.

No tradition—however sacred or ancient—should require a living being to endure chains, fear, violence, or suffering.

As a Buddhist, I believe compassion and metta, loving-kindness toward all beings, are at the heart of our faith. I am not asking for the Perahera to disappear. I am asking for elephants to be freed from suffering within it.

Tradition can continue. Faith can continue. But cruelty does not have to.

Please strengthen protections for captive elephants, end abusive handling, and lead Sri Lanka toward compassionate, elephant-free processions.

May faith never be separated from compassion.
May tradition evolve without cruelty.
Please hear their cries—and be their voice.
