รายงานขององค์การยูเนสโกระบุว่า จำนวนประชากรหญิงของอินเดียลดหายไปร่วม 50 ล้านคน สืบเนื่องจากอคติและความไม่เสมอภาคทางเพศ แม้รัฐบาลจะได้ออกกฎหมายกำหนดบทลงโทษแก่ผู้ฝ่าฝืน แต่การทำลายทารกเพศหญิง (ทั้งแรกเกิดและที่ยังอยู่ในครรภ์) ก็มิได้ลดน้อยลงเลย

ฉากของเรื่องคือเขตชนบทอินเดียในอนาคต ด้วยเหตุที่ถูกกำจัดตั้งแต่เป็นทารก ผู้หญิงจึงอยู่ในสภาพใกล้สูญพันธุ์ เมื่อเกิดค้นพบเด็กสาวเข้าคนหนึ่ง เธอจะถูกขายไปในทันที ให้เป็นภรรยา(หรือทาสกามารมณ์) ของชาย 5 คนพี่น้อง หลังจากพยายามหนีไปพร้อมกับคนงานชนชั้นต่ำ ซึ่งกลับกลายเป็นการจุดชนวนสงครามระหว่างวรรณะโดยไม่ตั้งใจแล้ว หญิงสาวจึงถูกจับล่ามโซ่ในโรงนา และกลายเป็นที่รองรับอารมณ์ใคร่ของสมาชิกในครอบครัว รวมทั้งพวกวรรณะต่ำด้วย และเมื่อเธอตั้งท้อง ทุกคนก็พากันอ้างสิทธิ์เป็นพ่อของเด็ก

ภาพยนตร์บอกกับเราว่าหากผู้หญิงขาดหายไปในสังคมใด ที่สุดแล้วผู้ชายย่อมหนีไม่พ้นสภาพตกต่ำ กระทั่งไม่หลงเหลือความเป็นมนุษย์อยู่เลยก็เป็นได้

According to a recent UNESCO report, some 50 million women are missing from the population of India due to gender discrimination. Although the government has brought legislation to penalize those indulging in the practice, female infanticide and feticide still continue unabated. The film explores the impact the absence of women can have and the instability which can creep into society be it physical, emotional, psychological. In futuristic rural India, due to female infanticide women are practically extinct. When a girl is spied, she is promptly sold and married to five brothers who make her their sexual slave. After an attempt to escape with the low caste family servant unwittingly triggers off a caste war, she is clamped in irons in a cowshed and raped repeatedly by her family and the low castes. When she becomes pregnant, everyone claims paternity.

The film underlines how the absence of women in a society inexorably leads to the debasement of men, draining them of all that makes them human.
