Spirit is a fascinating introduction into the Vietnamese spirtual beliefs and mysteries. Though a series of three interlocking stories, is woven the fate of a young writer named Loc.

In the visitor, Loc comes to reside in a remote bungalow. It seems abandoned, until he meets its sole occupant, a lovely young woman named Hoa. She is shy and sad, but her selfless consideration attracts Loc, who wins her over with his sweet openness to her. Her past remains a mystery. She hides a secret so dark that it will drive Loc to the edge of madness.

In only child, Loc now lives alone in the old house, where he is now cared for by a beautiful young psychiatry student, Linh. Linh sees past the madman, and to whom he once was someone with passion and talent. Under her care, Loc returns to reality and they fall in love and marry, but Linh cannot bear a child. She too has a dark secret, which soon comes back to haunt them both.

Through her perspective, the story comes full circle when she uncovers the final truth of the troubled history contained within the house.
