เมื่อคริสหนุ่มมหาวิทยาลัยเยอรมัน ประกาศหาเพื่อนร่วมห้องพัก เขาบังเอิญพบกับยูเนสนักเรียนเชื้อสายเยเมน แม้ว่าทั้งสองคนจะมีภูมิหลังที่ต่างกัน แต่คริสกับยูเนสก็กลายเป็นเพื่อนสนิทในเวลาไม่นานนัก ทั้งสองมีแฟนสาวที่น่ารัก และออกไปเที่ยวตามผับตามบาร์ต่างๆ ด้วยกันเกือบทุกวัน แต่ยูเนสเป็นพวกอารมณ์เดี๋ยวดีเดี๋ยวร้าย บางวันก็ลุกขึ้นบ่นโวยวายหาเรื่องที่ตัวเองต้องมาเป็นผู้อพยพให้เยอรมัน หรือไม่ก็ขังตัวเองอยู่ในห้องเป็นวันๆ

แต่หลังจากที่ยูเนสกลับจากการเดินทางไปเยเมน เขาก็เปลี่ยนเป็นคนละคน ยูเนสกลายเป็นพวกมุสลิมเคร่งศาสนา เขาเข้าเป็นสมาชิกกลุ่มนักเรียนอิสลาม และเริ่มต่อต้านอาหาร การแต่งตัว และการใช้ชีวิตแบบชาวตะวันตก ยูเนสร่วมงานปาร์ตี้กับเพื่อนๆ คืนสุดท้าย ก่อนที่จะหายตัวไปในวันรุ่งขึ้น คริสทั้งโกรธและเศร้า แต่ไม่นานอารมณ์เหล่านั้นก็ถูกแทนที่ด้วยความกลัว เมื่อเขาได้ยินข่าวเครื่องบินพุ่งชนตึกเวิลด์เทรดเซ็นเตอร์

When Chris advertises for a roommate, he comes across a Yemen - born student named Yunes. Despite their diffrent bankgrounds, they develop a close relationship, acquire attractive girl-friend, and pursue a busy social life marked by loud music and heavy drinking. Yunes can be moody unexpeactedly flaring up at his outsider status as an immigrant in Germany, or withdrawing into his room for days but after a trip to Yemen, he returns a changed man.

Now a devout Muslim, he joins an Islamic study group and rails against the food, dress and conventions of western society. He parties one last time, and the next day simply disappears. Chris experiences loss, hurt and anger, but those emotions are replaced by feeling much more frightening.
