Malen or Magdalena is the only daughter of a prayer woman. Stubborn and disobedient, Malen ignores her mother's pleas and becomes involved with Mike, a wily tourist driver who is very much like her. When Malen leaves town with Mike, her mother is heartbroken and dies.

When Malen returns, she is forced to take over her mother's job as a prayer woman in order to survive. Despite the disapproval of the other prayer women, Malen accepts prayer requests from desperate souls in exchange for donations.

Somehow, her prayers always seem to be answered and her clientele keeps growing. News about Malen's power as a prayer woman spreads and she reluctantly struggles with her newfound power. She can heal people even the devout Sister Dolor is convinced after Malen heals an old, festering wound on her foot.

Malen is transformed by her experience and is finally able to forgive herself for her sins, especially those against her mother. But then comes her biggest test. Mike's terminally ill son dies and he brings him to her. Can she bring him back to life? Will God grant her this miracle? Does she or does she not have the divine gift?
