Aurea, disillusioned and pregnant, is brought by caravan with her husband and mother to the remote and isolated sandy plains of Maranhão in northern Brazil where they expect to find fulfillment, impossible in a desolate landscape unpredictably sculptured by moving sand and undulating emotions.

It is here that three generations of women, metaphorically incarcerated by their loneliness, feelings and dreams of escape, live their cycles of destiny, like oceanic waves influenced by the lunar pull. In a place where there is nothing to do but wait, time is suspended and experience is surreal.

Inspired by a photograph of an abandoned house in the dunes, Andrucha Waddington has created a visually stunning and powerful saga remarkably interpreted by two of Brazil's finest actresses, mother and daughter, Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station) and Fernanda Torres.

An enormous box office success in Brazil, the film had its international premier at the Toronto Film Festival and is a composite visual, directorial and acting achievement.
