Water, the third film in the Elemental Trilogy after Fire and Earth, is set in 1938 colonial India during Gandhi's rise to power. The practice of child brides married off to much older men was prevalent. When the husband died, the widows, considered a financial burden, were sent to spend the rest of their lives in widows' houses.

They lived in penance, their heads shorn to atone for their sins, the cause of their husbands' deaths. When eight-year-old Chuyia is widowed, she is sent to live according to tradition in a widows' ashram.

Bright and rebellious, her feisty presence affects the lives of the other residents, and she becomes particularly close to Kalyani, a beautiful but conflicted young widow who has fallen in love with an idealist brahmin.

This sensitive, feminist subject caused a furor in the holy city of Benares amongst Hindu fundamentalists, and in 2000, they burned the sets. Filming resumed secretly four years later in Sri Lanka.
