It is night in Sarajevo, and a musical concert is underway. The lead cellist, a young Muslim man, watches the audience, waiting and anxious. After the concert, he meets his friend and lover, a Serb. The war is raging around them, and they must attempt to flee the besieged city. At the first checkpoint, they are captured by Bosnian Serb soldiers, looking for Muslims.

The Serb saves his lover by making him look like a woman; from that moment on, the story is that he is taking his fiancee to his hometown in southern Bosnia, where they will be married. They travel to a location held by the Serbs, in constant danger of discovery. When they reach the hometown of the Bosnian, they are greeted warmly by the man's father who almost immediately wants his son to get married.

What follows is a charade of deception: there is the constant cover-up, and the fear of letting the guard down. When the Serb is called away to war, the Muslim man is left in a no man's land, without any support.
