In Mongolia, as a result of desertification, the grasslands are drying up and the herds dwindling. Due to the Chinese government's attempt at urbanization, the nomadic Mongolian horsemen are facing extinction. The vast grasslands where they were free to roam with their cattle are being fenced and the horsemen are encouraged to give up their traditional lifestyle and move to the city.

For Wurgen it is an impossible thought. His more practicial wife, seeing the last of their sheep go, fights for survival by trying to earn enough money selling yogurt in order to send their son to school. Eventually the horse will have to be sold. Central to the film, the horse is not only Wurgen's friend and proud possession, but also the symbol of a better past and the link to a noble Mongol culture.

In this warm and moving film, Ning Cai, a well-known actor who is also the director, draws attention to the plight of Mongolian horsemen and their disappearing lifestyle. For some of us, it brings back the tragic disappearance of the Great Plains of the West and the Indians who roamed there.
