A rare portrait of life in the tiny Gulf state of Qatar, Lut Vandekeybus' documentary, Linda & Ali: Two Worlds within Four Walls, explores the cross-cultural marriage of American-born Linda and her Qatari husband, Ali Al Saigel. Gaining unprecedented access to the insular world of Qatari society, the director followed the couple and their seven children for three years, from 2001-2004.

Unlike many foreign wives, Linda has adopted the Shiite Muslim traditions of her husband. Swathed in black, she looks like any other Qatari woman. Within the four walls of their comfortable home in the capital Doha, however, Western and Middle Eastern ideals, morals and attitudes collide.

Vandekeybus' camera hones in on the family as they candidly discuss issues such as arranged marriages, second wives, religion, and Qatari society in general. Beyond their cultural differences, Linda and Ali are at loggerheads as a man and a woman. After 20 years together, their relationship has hit a wall. Linda ponders whether she should return to the US for a few months.

Will this unusual marriage survive? Linda and Ali are both 44 years old and having a mid-life crisis. In a way their problems are similar to those of couples in the West. Linda's fears are no different from those of women here who worry their husbands will no longer find them attractive and have an affair. - Lut Vandekeybus
