Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura), a civil engineer and leader of the French resistance (1942) is betrayed by a traitor and arrested. He escapes to Marseilles where he rejoins his network and inflicts retribution on his informer. Through cycles of captivity, escape, and intrigue, this World War II drama reveals the plight of the resistance fighters, their solitude, fears, relationships and sacrifices.
