Based on an autobiographical novel by Swiss author Corinne Hofmann, The White Masai tells the incredible story of a Swiss woman on vacation in Kenya whose powerful sexual attraction to a Masai warrior in his traditional dress inspires her to leave her boyfriend and to follow her heart.

Mad, impossible, unlikely these words disappear in the face of Huntgeburth's thoughtful, empowering, and beautifully crafted depiction of a relationship that faced every conceivable bureaucratic impediment and social taboo, but was undone by such familiar human emotions sexual jealousy, resentment and a mother's fear for her child's safety.

Central to the film's authenticity is the depiction of daily life in a Masai village where Carola is sustained by the warmth and humor of the people while enduring obvious challenges like dietary privation (the tribe largely subsists on milk mixed with blood, goat meat and tea) and her husband's ingrained cultural attitudes regarding conjugal affection and the role of women in the economy.

Like Carola herself, the director, cast and crew lived in tents among the Masai, studied the language and the customs, and endured10 hour days in the heat and dust.

The fruits of their labor are up on the screen: Huntgeburth brings to life a world most of us will never see and makes believable, and ultimately commendable, the actions of a woman that loved perhaps not wisely but too well.
