Joseph Dufresne (Anthony Perkins) a youth in the hinterland of Thailand, hungry for the city but tied to the land by his mother’s dream of some day turning their Thai rice fields into a rich estate. Silvana Mangano, as Perkins’ sister, is also rebellious but she stays with their mother (Jo Van Fleet), when Joseph finally quits the rice plantation.

Michael (Richard Conte) is seen as an adventurous man who helps the family when a raging sea destroys the makeshift sea wall protecting their fields. Mother and daughter are faced with the desperate need to build a new protective dike, a task made impossible because of their lack of funds.Michael cannot help, nor can his love for the daughter. She turns to Persoff, a reluctant admirer who has nothing to offer but money.
