Directors Thibaut de Longeville and Lisa Leone amusingly trace the ascent of sneakers from the 1970s, when sneakers were purchased almost solely for sports, to the present day, where this staple of leisure footwear is now a $26 billion industry. It is an industry that owes a huge debt to the hip hop culture that chose sneakers as its footwear of choice.

In pointed and amusing interviews and archival footage, Just For Kicks shows how this utilitarian object became more than fashion statement it is now a staple item of cultural significance that marked the emergence of urban culture as a force to be reckoned with.

The turning point when sneakers went from the underground to the mainstream is shown here in a rare piece of footage, capturing the moment when Run DMC convinced Adidas executives to pay them $1 million to endorse the German sneaker.

De Longeville and Leone interviewed a wide range of sneaker freaks, from French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz to a collector who claims to have enough sneakers to be able to go five years without ever wearing the same pair twice.
