เฮนรี่ พูล (ลุก วิลสัน) ประสบกับความสิ้นหวังครั้งใหญ่ในชีวิต จนเขาไม่อาจรับมือได้และปรารถนาอย่างยิ่งที่จะหายตัวไป เขาจึงตัดสินใจซื้อบ้านหน้าตาโหลๆ หลังหนึ่ง ในย่านชนชั้นกลางอันจืดชืดของลอสแอนเจลิส เขาเข้าไปหมกตัวอาศัยที่นั่นแบบปลีกวิเวก ขลุกอยู่แต่กับวอดกาและบรรดาอาหารขยะทั้งหลาย

แต่บ้านเพื่อนกลับไม่ยอมให้ เฮนรี่ ได้นั่งบูดบึ้งอยู่คนเดียวเงียบๆ อย่างที่หวัง เอสเปแรนซา (เอเดรียนา บาร์ราซา) เป็นคนแรกที่แวะมายินดีต้อนรับเขา นอกจากนี้ เฮนรี่ ยังอดไม่ได้ที่จะแอบมอง ดอว์น (ราดาห์ มิตเชลล์) ม่ายสาวข้างบ้านกับลูกสาววัย 8 ขวบ มิลลี (มอร์แกน ลิลี) ที่ไม่ยอมพูดอะไรสักคำเดียวหลังจากคุณพ่อคุณแม่ของเธอแยกทางกัน

แผนการเนรเทศตัวเองของ เฮนรี่ ต้องพังไม่เป็นท่า เมื่อ เอสเปแรนซา พบรอยด่างแปลกๆ บนผนังปูนที่บ้านของ เฮนรี่ เธอเชื่อว่ารอยนี้มีพลังอันน่าพิศวง และเริ่มเรียกนักจาริกแสวงบุญมาเยี่ยมชมสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์นี้ อีกทั้งยังเชิญคนจากโบสถ์ รวมทั้งบาทหลวง ซาลิซาร์ (จอร์จ โลเปซ) ให้เข้ามาตรวจสอบร่องรอยของสิ่งลี้ลับอีกด้วย

ถึงแม้ เฮนรี่ จะยังคลางแคลงใจ แต่เขาก็พบว่าตัวเองค่อยๆ กลับคืนสู่ชีวิตชีวาดังเดิม โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมิตรภาพเงียบๆ ระหว่างเขากับ มิลลี ตัวน้อย ทำให้เขากับ ดอว์น สนิทสนมกันมากขึ้น แล้ว เฮนรี่ ก็ตระหนักว่าการใช้ชีวิตอยู่กับความสิ้นหวังอย่างเงียบๆ นั้น ทำได้ยากกว่าที่คิด

Henry Poole (Luke Wilson) just wants to disappear. Shattered by circumstances beyond his control, he offers full price on a cookie cutter house in a drab, middle-class, L.A. neighborhood. He settles in to his indulgent isolation with a case of vodka and all the junk food he can eat.

Unfortunately for Henry, his new neighbors aren't about to let the newcomer spend his days sulking. Esperanza (Adriana Barraza) is the first to stop by and welcome Henry to his new home. Besides, Henry can't help noticing Dawn (Radha Mitchell), the beautiful young divorcee next door and her daughter Millie (Morgan Lily), an eight-year-old girl who hasn't spoken a word since her parents' break-up.

Henry's self-imposed exile is shattered when Esperanza discovers a mysterious stain on Henry's stucco wall that is seen to have miraculous powers. She begins leading pilgrimages to the holy site and invites church officials, including Father Salizar (George Lopez), to inspect the apparition.

Although Henry remains skeptical, he finds himself gradually drawn back towards life, especially after his silent friendship with Millie brings him closer to Dawn. Finally Henry realizes his plan to live out his days in quiet desperation is going to be much harder than he ever imagined.
