รูดี (เอลมาร์ เวปเปอร์) จะมีชีวิตอยู่บนโลกนี้ได้อีกไม่นาน มีเพียง ทรูดี (ฮันเนอลอร์ เอลส์เนอร์) ภรรยาของเขาเท่านั้นที่รู้ว่าเขาป่วยเป็นโรคร้าย ขณะที่ ทรูดี กำลังชั่งใจว่าควรจะบอกความจริงนี้กับสามีหรือไม่ คุณหมอก็แนะนำให้คู่รักวัยเกษียณร่วมกันทำกิจกรรมอะไรก็ได้ที่เคยวางแผนกันเอาไว้ แต่ยังไม่เคยได้ทำเพราะหาเวลาที่เหมาะสมไม่ได้

Rudi (Elmar Wepper) is not long for this world, but only his doctor and his wife, Trudi (Hannelore Elsner), know how serious his condition has truly become. As Trudi wrestles with whether or not to break the news to her ailing husband, the doctor recommends to her that the couple perhaps do something that they have been planning for years but could never find the time to fit into their busy schedules.

Later, Trudi convinces Rudi to travel with her to Berlin from the countryside to visit their children and grandchildren only to realize that they are emotionally distant and unavailable. When Trudi unexpectedly passes away, Rudi realizes that he never knew his wife as well as he wanted to or expressed his affection in a way that truly reverberated.

A grief stricken Rudi vows to honor Trudi's unfulfilled desires by embarking on a life-changing journey to Japan, a place she often dreamed of but never visited. A trip to Tokyo in the midst of the cherry blossom festival sparks an unlikely friendship with a young Butoh dancer who helps connect Rudi with his wife's lifelong love for the dance.
