Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen (Sacha Baron Cohen) is the fiercest dictator in all of North Africa, ruling the great Republic of Wadiya and risking his life to ensure that democracy never reaches the nation he so lovingly oppressed. However, he faces the ultimate culture clash when he decides to pay visit to the United States.

Shortly after arriving, he is kidnapped and his huge beard has been shaved off. So he's practically unrecognizable. He encounters activist Zoe (Anna Farris), who offers him a job at her alternative lifestyle co-op. Aladeen agrees and accepts Zoey's job offer because he has no money and no place to stay.

During living in the U.S, Aladeen tries to figure out who is behind the plan. He later knows that it was his treacherous uncle Tamir (Ben Kingsley). That's why Aladeen wants to thwart Tamir's plot and regain his position as a 'rightful' dictator.
