เซบาสเตียน (กาเอล การ์เซีย เบร์นัล) คือผู้กำกับชาวสเปนที่กำลังถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์ที่ตั้งข้อสงสัยต่อการค้นพบของ คริสโตเฟอร์ โคลัมบัส ในโบลิเวีย โดยมีผู้อำนวยการสร้าง คอสตา (หลุยส์ โตซาร์) และลูกทีมท้องถิ่นคอยประสานงานให้ เหตุการณ์ได้ดำเนินไปอย่างราบรื่นบ้างไม่ราบรื่นบ้าง จนกระทั่งเกิดความขัดแย้งเรื่องการแปรรูปกิจการน้ำให้เป็นรัฐวิสาหกิจ ปัญหาใหญ่ก็คือนักแสดงท้องถิ่นคนหนึ่งกลายเป็นผู้นำในการประท้วงไปซะได้

Spanish director Sebastian (Gael Garcia Bernal), his executive producer Costa (Luis Tosar) and all his crew are in Bolivia, in the Cochabamba area, to shoot a motion picture about Christopher Columbus, his first explorations and the way the Spaniards treated the Indians at the time.

Costa has chosen this place because the budget of the film is tight and here he can hire supernumeraries, local actors and extras on the cheap. Things go more or less smoothly until a conflict erupts over the privatization of the water supply. The trouble is that one of the local actors, is a leading activist in the protest movement.
