Talaash revolves around a police officer, Shekhawat (Aamir Khan), who investigates the mysterious death of a film star Armaan Kapoor. Shekhawat, comes to know that Shashi, a pimp, is involved somehow in the crime, who has fled the town with loads of money, he got from Kapoor.

On his personal side, Shekhawat spends insomniac nights, following the death of his son Kamran, who died in an accident. A woman in the neighborhood meets Shekhawat's wife Roshni (Rani Mukherjee), who claims that she spoke with Kamran's spirit. Roshni visits her regularly to speak with Kamran, that kindles the anger of Shekhawat, who does not believe in it.

Meanwhile, while trying to investigate the case, Shekhawat meets a sex worker Rosy (Kareena Kapoor), who helps him fight his psychological problems and also helps him with his enquiry. The rest of the plot intelligently unfolds the mystery behind the death, and how Shekhawat overcomes his personal problems and unites with his wife.
