Teens Recep and Mehmet trek daily between their small Anatolian village and a nearby town, where they serve apprenticeships. Recep works for a philosophical watermelon vendor, while Mehmet co-exists with a bad-tempered barber.

Both boys are madly obsessed with cinema. At night they collaborate on a movie projector of their own design, made from wooden cartons and a light bulb. Gradually, they learn about the technical gadgets necessary to abtain an image, and they begin to incorporate their own solutions. In addition an image, and they interested in girls.

Recep worships Nihal, a haughty beauty some five years his senior, who disdains him as a peasant boy. Meanwhile, to further complicate matters, Nihal's younger sister Guler cherishes unreciprocated feelings for Recep.
