On his deathbed, Hien’s stepfather Tuy (Nguyen manh Thang ) starts to tell him about his mother, but dies before he can reveal all. Hien (Truong huu Quy) then goes on a journey to find his past. Li An (Truong Ngoc Anh) had lived in a traditional village of potters. When she was found to be pregnant, the unmarried, willful girl refused to reveal the name of the father.

This insult to the village gods had the elders decree a harsh punishment. She was to be ostracized, her head shaved, and her baby set adrift on the river. But at the moment of punishment, a thunderstorm erupted, killing many villagers.

In the chaos, Tuy and two other itinerant woodcarvers saved Hien from the storm and rescued Li An. They went on to live an ideal unconventional life in the forest, with Li An being an equal lover to the three men until jealousy broke their utopia.

She receded into the background, becoming an unreal object of lust. For Hien, past and present blend into a lovely, sad legend. With exceptional historical accuracy in a ten year effort, the Doan team have recreated the atmosphere of precolonial Vietnam and captured the essence of this romantic legend with great beauty and fluid narrative.
