The Ring Finger is director Diane Bertrand's atmospheric adaptation of Yoko Ogawa's novel, which has been transported to the atmospherically photographed industrial waterfront of Hamburg with stunning results. The revelation of the film is the performance of newcomer Olga Kurylenko, as the young factory worker Iris.

When her finger is nearly severed in the bottling plant where she works, Iris searches for a job and a home where she can find refuge. She finds a room that she shares with a seaman she never sees, but stranger than her accommodation is the job she takes as a receptionist.

The man she works for takes clients' emotionally resonant mementos, and preserves them as if they were to be exhibited in a museum, no matter how mundane or ephemeral the object in question. She soon enters into an enigmatic relationship with her boss that both frightens and intrigues her.

Her life becomes consumed by her work, her boss, and the people whose specimens she catalogues (look for actress Edith Scob as the woman in room 223, who starred in the classic French horror film, Les yeux sans visage), until she is like one of the mementos, afloat in this strange museum.
