16-year-old Ryna lives in a small community on the Danube delta of Romania. She is the daughter of a vulgar and oppressive man who longed for a son, and who forces her to dress and act like a boy. He runs a gas station, so she has become adept at pumping gas, repairing motors, soldering metal, and driving all sorts of heavy vehicles.

Every night she drives into the small village to drag her father home, only to start the cycle again the next day. Her secret hobby is photography, which she carefully hides from her father, just as she hides her clandestine relationship with the mail boy who sends her film reels for development.

She is young but smart enough to know she must stay clear of the town mayor, a seedy, shifty character who easily manipulates her father for his own ends. One day, a young and attractive Frenchman arrives in town, intent on conducting some university research. He is clearly attracted to her, and she to him, but this is too dangerous for her father.

On the night that she wears a dress for the first time in her life, she is betrayed by the men who are the closest to her, and in the most horrible, soul-destroying manner. Ryna knows she must change her life. With the support of her mother and her grandfather, she surprises everybody with her strength and determination.
