Peter (Jason Connery) has a mission. His Grandmother has made him promise to return to her birthplace and though he is reluctant he obeys her dying wish and heads for a place he both loves and hates. His destination is Russia and a meeting with the last remnants of the Ramanov family, of which he is a member.

Sucked into a vortex of political intrigue, and shadowy goings on in the Polit Bureau, Peter tries to make sense of his family's tragic legacy. He is the Successor who holds the key to a fabulous fortune in gold and he is in great danger.

Chased by greedy KGB members who want the gold, the Monarchists who are desperate to see the return of the Russian Royal family and the hard-line neo-communists who desire his death because he has stumbled onto a plutonium smuggling ring, Peter is forced to go on the run to keep himself alive. His only friend in Russia is a cynical young Russian Historian who is slowly falling in love with him.
