The Jewish ghetto Vilnius, in 1941 Lithuania is run by Kittel, a young and Nazi officer. His job is to keep the ghetto's Jewish residents busy and to eliminate all those who are unproductive. When he meets the beautiful Jewish singer Hayyah, who had just escaped from imminent execution with a group of artists, actors and musicians, he demands that she sing.

Enchanted by her performence and beauty he spares her life, and is inspired to command the ghetto's Jews to open a theatre. Gens, the ghetto's Jewish police commander secretly does everything to keep the Jews from being executed and he wins Hayyah's heart. When the Germans are repelled by the Russians at Stalingrad, the tide of the war turns.

For Kittel, it is a time to try and save his own life and carry out the Nazi's final solution policy of Jewish extermination. For Hayyah, it is the determination to survive that conquers her fear as she looks ahead towards freedom.
