It is 1943, at the absolute height of World War II, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) who has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, has come to be disgusted by Hitler's (David Bamber) campaign of evil.

The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. Convinced that Hitler must die, Von Stauffenberg requests a transfer to Tunisia, where he loses his left eye, right hand, and three fingers during an Allied air raid.

Falling in with a group of German generals including Major General Henning von Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh), General Friedrich Olbricht (Bill Nighy), General Friedrich Fromm (Tom Wilkinson), and Colonel General Ludwig Beck (Terence Stamp), Stauffenberg is mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Operation Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler.
