In a world parallel to our own, the worst has happened, and humanity is in danger of extinction. From the ashes of destruction emerges a courageous rag doll named 9 (Elijah Wood) whose unique leadership skills could prove the key to survival for those who have not yet perished.

When 9 (Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction.

Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

Perhaps with a little help from his friends, who include domineering war veteran 1 (Christopher Plummer), aging inventor 2 (Martin Landau), stout mechanic 5 (John C. Reilly), visionary artist 6 (Crispin Glover), and fearless warrior 7 (Jennifer Connelly), 9 will prove capable of salvaging what still remains of this world, and laying the groundwork for a hopeful future.
