After the tobacco heiress, Doris Duke (Susan Sarandon) fires her butler for serving a chilled cantaloupe, the agency sends Bernard Lafferty (Ralph Fiennes), formerly household staff to Elizabeth Taylor and to Peggy Lee. He's an alcoholic, fresh out of rehab but he assures Duke he is capable of performing his duties without any problems.

What starts strictly as an employer/employee situation slowly evolves into a more emotionally intimate but non-physical relationship as Bernard begins to travel the world with Doris and cater to her every need. Acknowledging his sexual preference for men is not a problem, she even encourages him to pierce his ear, grow his hair, and wear vivid colors.

As the two become closer and Bernard becomes more relaxed, he begins to drink again, initially with discretion but eventually to an extent it begins to hinder his performance. Will Doris dismiss him as she always has dealt with employees who displeased her in the past? And can Bernard pull himself together when Doris needs him?
