May Markham (LAUREN BACALL) an elderly woman living alone does her best to hold on to her independent way of life while the world changes around her. While May's nosey neighbor Joan prattles away at the door and her friend Julia tries to place her in a nursing home, May's days are brightened by visits from her homecare worker Brian and from her intriguing neighbor Denny (HENRY CZERNY).

When Denny is found murdered in his apartment next door, a bullet in his skull, May receives a visit from his strange friend, Monica (CLAIRE FORLANI). Monica is not what she seems, she claims to be a Police Officer, but her intentions are anything but legal.

Monica is an undercover drug agent who has been "in" too long. The line between her job and her assumed lifestyle as girlfriend to crime boss Gale Carmody (PETE POSTLETHWAITE) has become blurred. Her double life begins to unravel as Monica discovers that her affair with Denny, a member of Gale's crew, has been compromised by Denny's role as an informant to her own drug task force.

Monica charms May, lulling her into a false sense of friendship, while she attempts to find out what May knows of Denny's missing final field report and a significant stack of missing drug money. The missing package details Monica complicity in murdering a rival a drug dealer as well as the incriminating murder weapon.

Gale turns on Monica and has her tailed to May's building. His men stake out the exits, waiting for Monica to emerge. With all pretenses dropped, Monica is trapped, scared and coming down from a heroin trip and desperately in need of a hit. While Monica prepares to shoot up again May seizes the opportunity to try to escape, but she is thwarted and subsequently bound and gagged by Monica.

Brian walks in on this volatile scene, but Monica gets the jump on him too, handcuffing him to May's piano. The missing field report is found and results in the revelation of Brian's criminal past, linking him to Denny and the drug money. But before Monica can destroy the report, dispose of the gun and steal the money, she is crippled by agonizing withdrawal symptoms.
