An unknown eastern European country in the early 30's: Branko's (Jakob Knoblauch) mother has died and the whereabouts of his violin-playing father are unknown. After the funeral, nobody feels responsible for him. He tries to track down his father from an old photo.

When Branko visits the local market and is falsely accused of stealing a fish, the red-haired girl Zora (Linn Sara Reusse) takes pity on him and helps him to escape from the police station. Zora is the leader of a small gang of four, who live in an abandoned castle above the town. Branko joins them.

The gang tries to survive in a hostile environment that calls them criminals because they have to steal their food. But there is also a handful of sympathetic grown-ups who treat them respectfully and try to help them back into the social life of the community.
