A high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves - fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles - enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. It's an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don't exist.

When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon. Then Greer discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon.

As the case grows more complicated, the detective discovers that in order to actually catch the killer he must abandon his own surrogate and venture outside the safety of his own home for the first time in many years, and enlists the aid of another agent Peters (Radha Mitchell) in tracking his target down.
