According to the Mayan calendar, the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. In Guatemala, hundreds of people have committed suicide believing the 2012 Hypothesis is true. In reaction to this, a secret organization that realizes the world is going to end sets about constructing massive space arks beneath the Himalayan Mountains.

When they discover that a global cataclysm will occur faster than expected, they must race to these ships in order to save the human race before all is lost. Amidst all of this, Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), a divorced father and part-time limousine driver, uses his knowledge of the ancient prophecies to rescue his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet) and children, and to ensure that the human race is not completely wiped out.
