สังคมอินเดียปัจจุบัน ถ้าใครมีเงิน มีชื่อเสียง ได้ภาษาอังกฤษ ทุกคนก็จะพากันยอมรับ แต่ถ้าขาดอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งไปก็ไม่วายถูกมองด้วยหางตา ชาชิ (ศรีเทวี) ก็เช่นกัน เธอเป็นแม่บ้านผู้ทุ่มเททำมาหาเลี้ยงชีพด้วยการขายของทานเล่น แต่อุปสรรคทางภาษาอังกฤษของเธอกลับทำให้ ซาทิช (อาดิล ฮุสเซน) ผู้เป็นสามีล้อเลียนเธอบ่อยๆ ทางฝ่ายลูกสาวเองก็อายเสียจนไม่กล้าแนะนำผู้เป็นแม่ให้ทางโรงเรียนรู้จัก

ชีวิตของชาชิดูจะหนีจากปัญหานี้ไม่พ้น เมื่อเธอและครอบครัวต้องเดินทางไปร่วมงานแต่งหลานสาวไกลถึงนครนิวยอร์ก ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ชาชิจึงตัดสินใจทิ้งความอาย มุ่งมั่นเรียนพูดภาษาอังกฤษให้สำเร็จก่อนงานวิวาห์จะเริ่มขึ้น สิ่งที่เธอได้รับดูจะไม่ใช่แค่ทักษะการพูดภาษาอังกฤษอย่างเดียว เมื่อเพื่อนร่วมชั้นเรียนชาวฝรั่งเศส โลรองต์ (เมห์ดิ เนบบู) ก็แสดงท่าทีสนใจเธออย่างเห็นได้ชัด

Money, fame and the knowledge of English language are 3 factors playing a huge role in how Indian society judges an individual. Shashi (Sridevi) is a dedicated Maharashtrian housewife who earns some money by making and selling snacks. But Shashi's dedication is taken for granted by her family. Her husband Satish (Adil Hussain) has little respect for her real talent while her 7th grade daughter Sapna is too ashamed to introduce her own mother to her classmates and teachers because of Shashi's poor English skills.

Acknowledging that her niece's wedding is held in New York, Shashi grabs it as her opportunity to get rid of insecure feeling coming from her poor language skills. To prove this to her family and friends, she enrolls into an English Speaking class where she surprisingly shines over her non-English speaking classmates.
