The castle was built around a harbour and soon became “The Key to the Kingdom” and a significant defensive fortification on the then Danish border. Kalmar, a town of 60,000, succeeds in mixing the old with the new; 16th and 17th century buildings find a purpose in modern life and more recent buildings are in tune with the old. The cobblestone streets take you through the centuries of the town’s history and there is an abundance of parkland to enjoy. From here you can take a trip to Öland across the bridge, while making plans to visit ‘Glasriket’ where you can try glass blowing, see the sights and buy some Swedish art glass-ware.



Royal Swedish palaces
The Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) in Stockholm city centre, Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms Slott) near Stockholm and Solliden (Sollidens Slott) on the Baltic island of Öland provide fascinating glimpses into how the Swedish royals live, work and holiday.  Architecturally, these palaces couldn’t be more different, one is Baroque, one is renaissance and the other is a gorgeous Italian-style villa.
Today there are ten royal Palaces with the main palace situated in the middle of Stockholm. It is the official residence of King Carl XVI Gustaf. The King Carl XVI Gustaf. The King and the Queen have their offices at the Royal Palace. They live at Drottningholm Palace 20 minutes west of Stockholm.



Helsingborg
Helsingborg is situated on the east side of the Oresund on Sweden's south-west coast. It's Sweden's 8th largest municipality with a population of about 128,000 (2009). Major businesses are service, trade, industry and tourism. In 2000 a branch of the University of Lund opened in the former Tretorn rubber factories a stone's throw from the Denmark ferries. On the opposite side of the sound in Denmark isElsinore (Helsingør). Before the Malmö-Copenhagen Øresund bridge was finished, most of the trans-scandinavian traffic (transit and tourist) used the ferries between Helsingborg and Elsinore. There is still heavy traffic across the Sound here because of the high population density on either side of the border. In addition, the ferries are usually somewhat cheaper than the fees for the bridge and they often provide a shorter route compared to the bridge.
