สถาบันภาพยนตร์อเมริกันประกาศรายชื่อ 100 ภาพยนตร์ตื่นเต้นเร้าใจที่สุด ซึ่งได้รับการคัดเลือกมาจากการสำรวจ 1,800 คนในวงการฮอลลีวู้ด ทั้งผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์ นักแสดง ผู้บริหารสตูดิโอ นักวิจารณ์และอื่น ๆ โดยลงคะแนนจากภาพยนตร์ที่เสนอให้ 400 เรื่อง

หนังเขย่าขวัญที่ได้รับการยกย่องมาแล้ว จากผู้ชมทั่วโลก Psycho ของผู้กำกับ อัลเฟรด ฮิทช์ค็อก ราชาหนังเขย่าขวัญมาเป็นอันดับหนึ่ง ตามด้วยหนังปลาฉลามยักษ์ไล่ล่ามนุษย์ริมชายหาด Jaws ของ สตีเว่น สพีลเบิร์ก มาเป็นอันดับสอง ส่วนอันดับสามได้แก่หนังผีหัวหมุนได้ The Exocist ที่แสดงโดย ลินดา แบลร์ สำหรับฮิทช์ค็อกมีผลงานกำกับของเขา 9 เรื่อง อยู่ใน 100 รายชื่อนี้ จากทั้งหมดที่เสนอไป 16 เรื่อง ของ สปีลเบิร์กมี 6 เรื่อง

สถาบันฯ ได้นำเสนอเป็นรายการทางโทรทัศน์เผยถึง 100 ภาพยนตร์ตื่นเต้นเร้าใจที่สุด ที่แพร่ภาพทางเครือข่ายโทรทัศน์ ซีบีเอส. โดย แฮริสัน ฟอร์ด เป็นผู้ดำเนินรายการ โดยหนังที่เขาแสดง 4 เรื่องอยู่ใน 100 รายชื่อนี้ คือ Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Fugitive, Blade Runner
